Inside Out 2: A Billion-Dollar Sequel That Speaks to Our Emotions

Disney and Pixar's Inside Out 2 has become the only film released in 2024 so far that has crossed the $1 billion mark and has made its way into the top ten highest-grossing films. The film surpassed The Avengers and made it into the Top 10 highest-grossing films worldwide. The Avengers made $1.521 billion; however, Inside Out 2 is close to making $1.555 billion globally. It also surpassed Furious 7's $1.515 billion business.

According to Box Office Mojo, James Cameron’s Avatar remains at the top spot, though it was released in 2009, making around $2,923 billion in lifetime gross at the box office. Marvel’s film Avengers: Endgame holds the #2 spot, making around $2,799 billion. Avatar: The Way of Water, released in 2022, holds the #3 spot with a lifetime gross of $2,320 billion, while his 1997 classic Titanic ranks #4 with $2,264 billion. The #5 to #9 spots are claimed by Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Jurassic World (2015), and The Lion King (2019).

"Inside Out 2" is a follow-up to the 2015 "Inside Out" blockbuster. Riley's mental state continues to be explored in the sequel, introducing new emotions like ennui, anxiety, embarrassment, and envy. If the movie's box office performance keeps up, it should climb the lists and possibly beat "The Lion King's" $1,656 billion mark, taking the ninth spot.

Inside Out 2's impressive box office performance could be attributed to its deep emotional resonance with audiences, tackling complex themes like anxiety and envy that are relevant. The film hits home for so many people at the box office because it taps into the raw, messy emotions we all experience growing up. For those who grew up with Riley in the first film, watching her navigate the turbulence of adolescence feels incredibly personal—like revisiting our teenage years. The movie introduces new emotions like Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment, making Riley’s journey real and relatable. We've all experienced constant self-doubt, the pressure to fit in, and an overwhelming fear that we're not good enough.

This time, Riley's story isn't just about a young girl trying to find joy; it's about a teenager wrestling with who she is and who she's becoming. And that struggle? It’s something we've all been through or are still going through. When Joy admits, "Maybe this is what happens when you grow up … You feel less Joy," it hits hard because it's a truth we often try to ignore. Another scene from the film portrays how anxiety, in its attempt to keep us safe, often makes matters worse, highlighting the overwhelming nature of these feelings.

Nevertheless, "Inside Out 2" conveys a positive mindset. It also serves as a reminder that while we cannot control or ignore our emotions, they need not define who we are. Riley's journey to embracing her full spectrum of feelings and finding her true self resonates deeply. It's a reminder that we're all more than the sum of our fears, doubts, and insecurities. This emotional honesty and the film’s ability to make us reflect on our own experiences draw people in and make it a hit at the box office. It's not just a movie; it's a mirror of our lives, offering comfort, understanding, and a sense of shared humanity to children and adults.
