Doncic and Irving Fall Short: Celtics' Defence Stifles Mavericks

The 2024 NBA just saw history being made as the Boston Celtics emerged victorious with a 4-1 series win, defeating the Dallas Mavericks. This championship wasn't just their first title since 2008, but also the title that cements their place as the franchise with the most championships won, breaking the long held tie with the Los Angeles Lakers at 17.

But the series wasn't without its moments. The Mavericks, led by a duo we've all grown to love over the season -- Luka Doncic and Kyrie Erving -- pushed the Celtics in game 2 and game 3. The “Jays” -- Jayson Taytum and Jaylen Brown -- proved to be unstoppable, consistently delivering high-scoring performances.

Game 4 had everything on the line. It was almost unbelievable to see Luke and Kyrie come THIS far for THIS?

Then it happened. It was a blowout win for the Mavericks (122-84). Luka and Kyrie led Dallas’s offence, while Celtic’s reliable shooters and defenders struggled to keep up.

Game 5, played on June 17th at TD Garden, was a crowning moment for the Celtics. Jrue Holiday got off to a hot start with three quick buckets, and Tatum gave a dominant 31-point, 8-rebound, and 11-assist performance. The final score, 106-88, showed us Boston's defensive dominance and overall control throughout the game. Brown's consistent performance earned him the well-deserved Finals MVP title, averaging 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5 assists per game.

This championship win was one of the sweeter ones for the Celtics. It marked exactly 16 years since their 17th title, and broke a tie that had stood for decades. The passionate-as-always Boston fans erupted in celebration, solidifying their team's legacy as one of the NBA's greatest dynasties.

As much as a Celtics win pains many of us, this is undeniably a historic achievement for them, as we saw younger players like Brown and Tatum turn into beasts, and a thrilling back-and-forth battle between the two teams.

In the end, Kevin Garnett was right, anything IS possible. The Celtics reigned supreme but one thing is for certain -- the NBA landscape has shifted, and the league eagerly awaits the next chapter.
